Beth Maclay Doriani, Ph.D., draws on her specialty in literary studies, specifically poetry, for the Making Sense study, as well as her theological training. She taught literature as a professor and served in Christian higher education administration for over twenty-five years. She is the author of Emily Dickinson, Daughter of Prophecy (University of Massachusetts Press), which explores the poetry of Emily Dickinson within the poet's religious milieu, the heritage of Jonathan Edwards. focusing on the voice of a prophet. Beth studied at Calvin College (B.A.), Kent State University (M.A.), and the University of Notre Dame (Ph.D.), with additional theological study at the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary, leading to her calling as a Commissioned Lay Pastor for the East Central Presbytery of ECO. Beth has led countless Bible Studies and has taught a variety of biblical topics to a range of people. She served as elder, Bible Study leader, and youth volunteer at her former church in Chesapeake, Virginia, and elsewhere, before joining the evangelical Presbyterians of ECO to launch a new church in Chesapeake, called Church of the Living Hope (ECO), where she serves as the lead preaching pastor.
