Making Sense of the
 Scriptures
Understanding the Bible's Grand Story

Reading the  Bible can be confusing.  When we think we finally grasp the meanings of a single book of the Bible, we may still wonder, how does it all fit together?  It's a long book, a collection of writings written over the course of millennia.  Is that all it is, a collection of disparate pieces of writing?  Sure, it's all about God and the Christian faith, but how do the parts fit together?

What's it about, anyway?

That is what this study is all about-- exploring the broad sweep of the Scriptures, from the beginning, to the middle, to the end.  In this study, we explore the story of the Bible.  Not "story" as in myth, legend, or imaginative tale, but story as flow-- that is, where the history of God's work begins, how God becomes involved with humanity, and where God's involvement with us will take us in the future.

This is a Bible study by a literary scholar and pastor -- Beth Maclay Doriani -- through thoughtful questions and background notes.  Not a treatise by a theologian, Making Sense of the Scriptures pays attention to the literary
features of the Bible, such as the beauty of the language and imagery, while tracing its central themes.

We won't read the entire Bible. We'll look at specific passages, selected to help you see that the Bible reads much like a four-act play.

If you are brand new to the Bible, this study is for you.  If you have read it for years and want to understand the core of the Bible, the background notes will take you in the right direction.

By the time you are done, you, too, will be able to tell the story of the Bible to anyone who asks. And you'll better understand the meaning and purpose of your own life.

How to use this book

Individuals

Never picked  up a Bible?  Pick one up now and just read this book alongside it. Any version of the Bible will do-- NIV, ESV, NASB, whatever.  (If you're new to this, these are different translations of the Bible, since it was originally written in Hebrew and Greek.) We use the New International Version (NIV), so that would be a good choice if you need to buy a Bible. Making Sense  directs you to key texts in the Bible, gives you information, and asks you questions about what you are reading, to keep your interest sparked. Do you have an interested  friend? If you do, read this book with your friend. That is the best way, as your friend can help you with deeper understanding.

People who already know the Bible have enjoyed using Making Sense for their personal devotions and prayer. You're invited to look at a variety of passages on a single theme, so it lends itself to personal study and meditation.

Groups

This book works well for group studies.  A Discovery Bible study-- a neighborhood group of people interested to learn about the Bible--can read Making Sense with a Christian friend to lead the group.  It works well with adult classes at church, high school or college groups interested in a serious study, and one-on-one mentoring, such as with confirmation students.  One home group resides in Santiago, Chile, where Chilean Christians draw on it (in a Spanish translation) to further their understanding of the Bible. Making Sense is intentionally flexible.
